Operaton Fiela continues to make inroads in the fight against crime in the Nelson Mandela area. The operation started at 02:00 on 11 June 2015 and continued till 08:00 this morning with specific areas cordoned off and yielded the following successes:
Twenty one (21) suspects were arrested – six for robbery, housebreaking and theft, two for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, four for arson, one for attempted murder and the remainder for various crimes including malicious damage to property, the contravention of a protection order, reckless and negligent driving and drunken driving.
Dagga with an estimated street value of R5 000, 00 was seized and a 30-year-old suspect was arrested. In a separate search, alert SAPS members recovered an amount of cash hidden in between meat inside a fridge, two cellular phones and documents. Two suspects aged 25 and 45 years were arrested for possession of and dealing in drugs.
More than 700 persons, 250 buildings and 126 vehicles were searched. Eight knives were also seized. Two vehicles with tampered engine numbers were recovered.
Acting Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Major General Zamuthango Mki, thanked all the members and officials deployed at the operation. “Operation Fiela continues to address crime and criminal activities in a structured and co-ordinated manner. We are determined to make the communities safer and free from criminals and criminal activities. We are also committed to ridding our townships and villages of drugs that are destroying the lives of many young people,” he concluded.
