Cradock police arrested a 26 year old mother on Tuesday for child abandonment.
Captain Stefanie Smith said this follows the discovery of a week old baby boy in a water-furrow in Queen Street, Cradock, on Tuesday morning.
It is alleged that the mother left the baby in the water-furrow.
The baby was taken a local hospital after being rescued.
Lieutenant Andile Kula and Constable Monica Bouwer, the investigators in the case, managed to trace the mother of the baby to Steynsburg where she was arrested.
The 26 year old suspect will appear in court tomorrow on a charge of child abandonment.
