Anti-child abuse NGOs are outraged after a Plettenberg Bay teacher, accused of a string of sexual offenses against children, was released on bail.
The 42-year-old man was granted R3,000 bail in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrates Court yesterday.
The award-winning teacher was arrested two weeks ago, for the second time this year, following allegations that he raped a 15-year-old boy at school.
In June, he had been arrested for the alleged sexual assault of a 10-year-old pupil.
Joanne Barrett of Women and Men Against Child Abuse says the state's decision not to oppose bail is shocking.
“These are children from a special needs school, some who are even disabled, which makes this case even worse. How can the state let the victim down like this?”
Green Hearts spokeswoman Yvette Wilschut says this sends the wrong message.
“A schedule 6 offence is actually one of the worst offences and we can’t understand… who is going to start protecting our children in this country?”
