MOTHERWELL - FAMILY CLAIM PRISONER WAS 'BEATEN TO DEATH DURING POLICE RAID'

DRAMATIC scenes played out at the Motherwell Cemetery in Port Elizabeth yesterday as the family of a man who died at St Albans Prison claimed he was beaten to death during a police raid.

Mourners argued yesterday whether the body of Luvuyo Manqunyana, 42, should be buried immediately or wait for a postmortem report.

Manqunyana, of Motherwell, died on December 18. He was serving a 15-year sentence for armed robbery.

Manqunyana’s sister, Mandisa Kinzela, 45, claimed when she viewed the body yesterday it showed signs of injuries consistent with a beating.

“His forehead was covered with a [bandage] and there was blood in the ear,” she said.

Kinzela said the family suspected he died after allegedly being beaten by the police’s Tactical Response Team (TRT).

“My lawyer said we should not proceed with the burial. My brother died in a very suspicious manner,” she said.
