Warrant officer Alwin Labans says the men entered the Spaza Shop in Timothy Valley in the city's northern areas at around 11am and began stealing goods.
Labans says a shot went off and the 27 year-old Ethiopian shopkeeper was struck in the head. He died on the scene.
Labans says the robbers fled with cash and cigarettes.
