PORT ELIZABETH - COULD AN ARMED ROBBERY IN UITENHAGE ROAD AND A HIGH SPEED CHASE IN NEW BRIGHTON BE CONNECTED?

It is alleged that on Sunday, 1 May 2016 at about 20:30, the complainant, a foreign national was in his takeaway shop in Uitenhage Road Port Elizabeth when an unknown man entered the shop. As the person entered, he fired a shot in the shop. The suspect assaulted the complainant with the butt of the gun. Two other men appeared at the door of the shop. The suspect then loaded cigarettes in a packet, took cash and two cellphones before fleeing. No other injuries sustained. A case of  Armed Robbery is being investigated.

Not long after this incident, New Brighton Crime Prevention members were engaged in a shootout between occupants in a bakkie and police. The occupants started firing on police who retaliated with the same. The driver , age unknown was fatally wounded while one other person was shot in his leg and the other suspect was arrested in a nearby house in Zokufa Street New Brighton. Police have opened an inquest  and an attempted murder case relating to this incident.

Investigators from SAPS Mount Road and New Brighton are busy establishing whether there is a link into both cases.
