A career criminal was shot and killed by police during an armed robbery at a supermarket in Pellsrus, Jeffrey's Bay on Friday night.
His five accomplices managed to escape and are still at large.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkohli says the man was shot by police when he opened fire on them outside the Shoprite Supermarket in Seekooi Street at around 6.30pm.
It appears that he had been posted as a look-out while his accomplices were inside.
Nkohli says the deceased was from Port Elizabeth, was well known to police, and could be linked to a number of other robberies in the city. Two firearms, believed to be stolen, were found next to the dead man's body.
A store employee was struck by a stray bullet during the shoot out and was admitted to hospital. His injuries are not life threatening.
