PORT ELIZABETH - OPERATION LOCKDOWN NETS 29 CRIMINALS IN 2 DAYS

Between midnight on Sunday night, 25 September and 06:00 on Tuesday 27 September 2016, integrated large-scale police operations were held in Port Elizabeth, Grahamstown, Uitenhage and Humansdorp under Operation Lockdown. Over 250 SAPS members took part in focused arrest-and-seizure and cordon-and-search operations.

These #OpLockdownPE activities were very successful and 29 suspects were arrested, most of them having been identified beforehand during intensive investigations and for whom warrants of arrest had been issued. R1 million worth of Mandrax tablets were seized as well as three firearms and other drugs and exhibits.

Another aspect of the operation involved an integrated police team searching awaiting trial prisoners in St Albans Prison. 29 cellphones and other items were seized.

"We are confident that these operations, during which alleged gang members and a prominent gang leader were arrested, will disrupt gang activities in the focus areas, as intended," said Lieutenant General Gary Kruser, Deputy National Commissioner-National Management Intervention.
