Police have warned Bay residents to be vigilant after new crime trends were identified.
Spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the most noticeable new trends included an increase in vehicle theft at car washes and churches, and pupils being robbed.
“It has been noted that scholars, especially in the Algoa Park, Bethelsdorp and Westering areas, are being robbed of their cellphones while walking to and from school,” Naidu said.
“Robbers usually approach scholars who are alone and ransack their schoolbag and demand the cellphone.
“Police are warning teenagers not to walk with cellphones in their hands and only if absolutely necessary should phones be taken to school.”
