GRAHAMSTOWN - POLICE INVESTIGATE TRAGIC DROWNING OF 2 YOUNG GIRLS AT LOCAL DAM



Grahamstown police have opened an inquest following the drowning of two girls aged 6 and 7 years on a farm dam in the Riebeek East area on Sunday afternoon.

Police say another minor child who witnessed the drowning alerted an elder to the incident. The two girls, whose names have been withheld were from the same family as their mothers were siblings. They lived with their grandmother

Police spokesperson Mali Govender said one of the girls had been already retrieved by a local resident SAPS arrived. The second one was found after the arrival of police dive unit.

Grahamstown Cluster Commander Brigadier David Kanuka said: "Words cannot adequately express my condolences on the loss of these two young children, as no amount of words can return these children to us.

“Parents and guardians are urged to keep a watchful eye on children as they are drawn to explore. Always ensure that minors are in the company of a responsible adult and that they are supervised to avoid unfortunate tragic incidents of this nature.
