A teenager was fatally shot following an argument with a taxi driver after he apparently refused to pay his taxi fare in Van Vuuren Street, Bethelsdorp, on Monday.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Alwin Labans says the 16-year-old stopped the taxi in Stanford Road and when it was time to pay, he allegedly pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the taxi assistant.
Labans says the deceased then jumped out of the taxi but the taxi driver immediately stopped the vehicle and approached the teenager, demanding payment.
He says the youth then pointed his firearm at the taxi driver, who in turn pulled out his own firearm and fired two shots at the teenager.
Warrant Officer Labans says the 16-year-old then fled on foot and was found lying dead some 500 metres from the scene with a gunshot wound to the back.
A case of murder is being investigated.
