PORT ELIZABETH - POLICE SWOOP DOWN ON THIEVES WHO STOLE R650 000 WORTH OF STOCK FROM NEWTON PARK SPORTS STORE


In an intelligence led operation two suspects were arrested for an alleged business robbery and property to the value of approximately R120 000 was recovered,

It is alleged that on Thursday, 11 April 2019 at about 15:00, 2 couples entered a sports store in CJ Langenhoven Street in Newton Park, pretending to be customers. One of the males produced a firearm and threatened the staff. Another 3 males entered the store and the staff was tied up. Golf shirts, shoes, caps and other clothing to the value of about R650 000 and cash was taken. They all fled in a VW Caddy.

On Tuesday, 16 April 2019 at 02:00, members from the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit, Mount Road Cluster Trio Detective Task Team and PE Flying Squad swooped in on a house in Govan Mbeki Township near Kwazakele. The house was searched and suspected stolen items which included golf shirts, shoes, caps and pants as well as a revolver with rounds was confiscated. A 20 year old suspect was arrested and detained on charges of possession of suspected stolen property, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and business robbery.

At about 06:00, further investigation led the team to another house in Connacher Street in New Brighton. More suspected stolen goods were recovered. A 33 year old male was arrested and detained on charges of possession of suspected stolen property and business robbery.

Both suspects will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates’ court on Thursday, 18 April 2019.
