EASTERN CAPE - CASH IN TRANSIT OFFICERS FIRE AND SHOOT WOULD-BE ROBBER

Eastern Cape police have arrested one suspect for an attempted cash-in-transit robbery in Ngqeleni near Mthatha on Friday afternoon.

National police spokesperson, Colonel Brenda Muridili says it is alleged that security officers collected money from a local shop, and as they were driving off, they noticed that their vehicle was being shot at, and they immediately returned fire.

She says one of the suspects sustained a gunshot wound, while the other suspects managed to flee the scene.

The police recovered a handgun with rounds of ammunition at the scene and the suspect is currently in hospital under police guard.

Muridili says a 72-Hour Activation Plan was activated, and members from Crime Intelligence, the Hawks and Organised Crime Detectives were mobilised to hunt down the perpetrators.
