EASTERN CAPE - 'DEAD MAN' ARRESTED FOR R2.5 MILLION LIFE COVER POLICY CLAIM FOR HIS OWN DEATH


A 36-year-old male suspect, Sezardino Diko from Mthatha appeared briefly at the Mthatha Magistrate's Court yesterday, 03 October 2019 facing a charge of fraud.

Eastern Cape SAPS Provincial Commercial Crime Unit arrested him on Wednesday, 02 October 2019.

A case of fraud was opened on 22 August 2018, after a complainant was reported to the police.

It is alleged that around April 2018, Mr Siyanda Sezardino Diko applied for a life policy amounting to R2.5 million at Liberty Life through Standard Bank and put himself as the beneficiary. The accused committed fraud by making a false claim at Standard Bank on June 2018. Through this false claiming he pocketed a sum of R2, 5million from Liberty life cover policy by claiming that Siyanda Diko, ‘his brother’ has passed away.   Siyanda Sezardino Diko was the actual beneficiary in that policy.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Siyanda Sezardino Diko and 'Siyanda Diko' is the same person. Accused submitted false documents such as a death certificate and post mortem at Doves funeral parlor in Mthatha and an unknown male was buried at Mbuqe cemetery at Umtata.

The accused appeared at Mthatha magistrate on 03 October 2019 and the case was postponed to 8 October 2019 for bail application. The suspect remains in custody.
