A teenage gang member will spend the next 10 years behind bars for the murder of a man from Bethelsdorp in Port Elizabeth in 2017.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said that Giovanni Peters was sentenced on Monday for the murder of 21-year-old Jemaine Lewack who was gunned down while sleeping in a shack in Foxglove Street in Bethelsdorp in January 2017.
She said that Lewack sustained several gunshot wounds to his upper body and succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention.
Naidu said that Peters, who was 16 at the time, was arrested in June that year and had been in custody since. A second suspect arrested in connection with the incident was acquitted earlier during proceedings.
She said he was sentenced to 10 years for murder, and to four years in total for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in the PE Regional Court.
The sentences will run concurrently.
Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Major-General Thembisile Patekile, commended the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Xolani Peta and the prosecuting authority for ensuring that the accused remains behind bars.
