A Port Elizabeth doctor has been fined R40 000, or two years in jail, after being convicted on charges of fraud and attempted fraud in the city's Commercial Crimes Court.
However, half of the sentence imposed on Doctor Bongani Nqini on Friday, was suspended for a period of five years.
He had initially pleaded not guilty during a court appearance in December 2011.
Nqini was arrested in a sting operation, when an undercover police woman obtained a backdated medical certificate from him without being examined.
He later submitted the false claim, in the amount of R211.30, to the police medical aid scheme, Polmed, which was later rejected.
