An arson docket has been opened for the fire that ravished a Billabong warehouse at the Billabong Village in Da Gama Road in Jeffrey’s Bay, in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday night.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkohli, said “With regards to the outcomes of our preliminary investigation which suggest that there was foul play so the case has now been changed from an inquiry into a case of arson”.
This means that authorities now believe that the fire was started deliberately.
The fire occured merely a week before the seaside town hosts the annual Jeffrey’s Bay Winterfest.
Kouga Municipality spokesman Mfundo Sobele said “Our fire department reacted immediately and‚ on arrival‚ the whole warehouse building had already caught alight”.
Jeffrey’s Bay Fire Department were unable to control the blaze and the entire building was destroyed, however, the surrounding buildings were saved from the flames.
No staff members were injured during fire.
