SLOVAKIA - PORT ELIZABETH FATHER BECOMES A FUGITIVE IN EUROPE AFTER SNATCHING HIS DAUGHTER

A desperate father from Port Elizabeth has become a fugitive in Europe after snatching his daughter in Slovakia.

Michael Kliment said yesterday that he had taken the “radical decision” after spending the last three and a half years trying to get his daughter, Mija, back home after she was kidnapped by her mother in 2013. The case came to a head when the girl’s mother passed away three months ago.

He snatched the 8-year-old when she left school earlier this week. He was flanked by four bodyguards he worked with in the 1990s when he grabbed Mija from Banská Bystrica, a city in central Slovakia, on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Department of Justice, as far as South African law is concerned, Kliment has full rights to his daughter, who is a South African citizen. However, leaving Europe is proving to be quite hard for the 43-year-old man and his daughter.

“My face is splashed all over Czechoslovakian television and a watch has been put on my Shengen visa,” he said.

Kliment and his daughter are now switching hotels and knocking on the doors of South African embassies in efforts to leave Europe.
