An Eastern Cape man facing two counts of murder after a savage mob-justice attack in 2013 shocked a court when he revealed that he was recently elected as an African National Congress (ANC) ward councillor.

The Herald (www.heraldlive.co.za) reported on Friday that Vukile Dyele‚ 38‚ has denied any involvement in the death of two young men‚ claiming he was a curious bystander.

The ANC said he would only be removed from his position if he were sentenced to no less than a year in prison without the option of a fine.

Dyele‚ and five other Booysen Park residents‚ in response to gang members terrorising their neighbourhood‚ allegedly took the law into their own hands in May 2013 and beat two men to death.

After police intervened‚ residents allegedly dragged Lunga Xola and Bulelani Lombo – suspected members of the Big Naz gang – out of the police van and continued the deadly assault.
