UITENHAGE - WOMAN ARRESTED FOR FALSELY OPENING CELLPHONE ROBBERY CASE


An attentive and very alert detective from Uitenhage SAPS arrested a 31-year-old female on Monday, 18 February 2019 at 13:30 on a charge of perjury. The arrest followed, after a case of robbery (of a cellphone) was opened by the 31-year-old complainant on Saturday, 16 February 2019, after she was allegedly robbed by an unknown male on Thursday, 14 February 2019. According to the victim’s statement, she was approached by an unknown male who verbally threatened her and robbed her of her cellphone on 14 February 2019 at about 05:30, close to the corners of John- and Caledon Street, Uitenhage, when she was suddenly. The victim only reported the case of robbery at SAPS Uitenhage two days later.

Intensive investigations into the alleged robbery followed and it was exposed that the cellphone was never stolen and that it was still being used by the same 31-year-old complainant. The accused, Nolubabalo Gula (31) appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court today, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 on a charge of perjury. She was released on warning and the case was remanded until Wednesday, 6 March 2019, for further investigation.

The acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll commended the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Deon Roos for his excellent investigation skills and ensuring that those who break the law are brought to book. Brigadier Koll also warned the community not to make false statements, as perjury is a serious offence and the consequences can be severe.
