A 20-year-old reveller drowned at a pool party in Port Elizabeth over the weekend.

A Spokesperson for Netcare 911 Shawn Herbst says the incident occurred in the early hours on Sunday morning.

He says reports from the scene allege that a 20-year-old male had fallen into a swimming pool at a clubhouse while socializing and that people on scene were not able to find him as there was no light.

When medics arrived on scene the patient had already been pulled out the water by the SA Police Service and members of the public.

The patient was assessed however found to have no signs of life and declared deceased on the scene.

Herbst said circumstances leading up to the man falling into the pool and subsequent drowning were being investigated by the police.

It has since come to light that the pool was situated on South Campus at the Nelson Mandela University.

NMU expressed their condolences on their official Twitter account.
