EASTERN CAPE - SUSPECT CAUGHT WITH BOXES OF CIGARETTES WITH A VALUE OF OVER R700 000

Klipplaat SAPS searched a vehicle and discovered boxes of cigarettes hidden under charcoal with an estimated value of R 716 000.00



It is alleged that on Saturday, 25 July at about 02.30, members of Klipplaat police were conducting patrols when they stopped and searched a Toyota Hilux bakkie which belonged to a business owner in Steytlerville.

On searching the vehicle the alert Policemen found fourteen boxes containing 718 cartons of cigarettes, hidden under bags of charcoal.

The total street value is R 716 000.00

The 41-year-old Suspect was arrested and the illegal cigarettes were confiscated under Klipplaat Case Disaster Management Act Regulations Reg 45 read with reg 48(2) as amended: Selling of tobacco, tobacco products, e-cigarettes and related products to member of public.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga commended the Members from Klipplaat members for the success. 

“Criminals will use any mode to conceal and transport their illegal products. Police must clamp down on the movement of illegal merchandise,” she added.
