PORT ELIZABETH - 2 SUSPECTS CAUGHT WALKING ON MARINE DRIVE WITH SUITCASES FILLED WITH ABALONE WORTH R80 000
In our efforts to ensure that the endangered marine life is protected, PE K9 Unit and the marine coastal Dark Water Ops arrested two suspects yesterday afternoon in Port Elizabeth.
It is alleged that at about 15:30 on 23 July 2020, the two suspects aged 22 and 35 were spotted walking at the corners of Marine Drive and Victoria Road.
Both were wheeling suitcases with them.
As police approached them they noticed water leaking from the suitcases.
Upon searching the bags, a total of 138 units of abalone were found.
The men were detained for contravening the Marine Living Resource Act 18/1998 Reg. 36 – illegal possession of abalone.
The value of the abalone is R80 000-00.
They are expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 27 July 2020.
