PORT ELIZABETH - MALAWIAN NATIONAL CONVICTED OF DEFRAUDING OVER R600 000 IN PENSION MONEY

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in the Eastern Cape welcomes the conviction handed down to Kasenjera Bashir (40) by the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday.


Bashir, a Malawian national, was convicted for fraud and contravention with several acts that include Consumer Protection Act, POCA Act as well as the Immigration Act. Bashir’s case has been remanded to 21 August 2020 for sentencing.

Bashir lured unsuspecting victims through an advertisement in a local Newspaper, claiming that he is “professor Anandkat” who can assist those with financial distress.

A professional teacher reached out seeking financial assistance in October 2017.

He consulted on several occasions and more demands for money coupled with some rituals were made for a greater returns.

Consequently, the victim resigned to gain access to his pension money and handed over R 656 000-00 in cash to Bashir in anticipation of great returns.

Realising later that he had been conned, he reported the matter to the local police in Motherwell who later referred the matter to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime investigating team for a further probe.

Bashir was arrested on 19 April 2018 and in the process offered a R100 000-00 gratification to the arresting officer to set him free.
