PORT ELIZABETH - SUSPICIOUS CAR IN WALMER LEADS TO THE ARREST OF 6 SUSPECTS CAUGHT WITH DAGGA & HOUSEBREAKING IMPLEMENTS

Six suspects were arrested just after an alert was put out by a private security company about a suspicious white BMW driving around in the Walmer area last night, 02 August 2020.

It is alleged that at about 20:45, Captain Karen Nel and Sergeant Sue-Jen Wolmarans were patrolling in Circular Drive, Overbaakens when the BMW passed them.  

As they followed the vehicle, it started to speed away. They gave chase and the vehicle stopped in a yard in Van der Heever Street, Overbaakens. 

During the chase the suspects threw a bag out the car. 

The bag contained gloves, various screwdrivers, torches and a crowbar.

After apprehending the 4 suspects, the two policewomen requested backup. 

The vehicle was searched and more gloves and housebreaking implements were found inside. A pepper spray was also found on one of the men. 

One of the suspect’s informed the officers that he lives in the house. 

The house was searched and a 25-year-old woman was arrested for dealing in dagga. 

A total of 1.117kg compressed dagga was found in her room. 

An outside flatlet was also searched and a 39-year-old male was also arrested for dealing in dagga. 

A total of 10.72kg compressed dagga, a scale, plastic bags, and cash were found in his room. 

The estimated total value of dagga is about R30 000-00.

The 4 suspects, aged between 23 and 32 years old were detained on charges of possession of housebreaking implements and possession of suspected hijacked vehicle. 

The vehicle was reported hijacked in Randburg in June 2018. The vehicle was impounded by police.

According to police information, this BMW was frequently seen in the area after housebreakings occurred. 

Detectives are busy probing whether the suspects could be linked to cases of housebreakings in the Walmer area.

All 6 suspects will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates’ court on Wednesday, 05 August 2020 on their respective charges.

Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Major General Thembisile Patekile commended the two policewomen for the excellent arrests. 

‘As the country celebrates, women’s month, our women in blue have demonstrated their remarkably brave and selfless patriotism in ensuring that criminals irrespective of gender will not escape the wrath of the law. Their actions undoubtedly remind us of the critical role that our women in blue play in ensuring the safety of our citizens,’ added Maj Gen Patekile.
